Fahima Egeh Mahamud, who runs the Future Leaders Early Learning Center in Minneapolis, has been charged with federal offenses concerning alleged fraud within government-supported childcare and nutrition programs. Previously, she was implicated in the extensive Feeding Our Future scandal, one of Minnesota’s largest fraud cases linked to fraudulent meal services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The allegations encompass two interconnected fraudulent schemes. The first, associated with Feeding Our Future, claims that Mahamud enrolled her daycare in the federal child nutrition program but falsely asserted that thousands of meals were served.
Court filings reveal her center received over $850,000 from this program between December 2020 and July 2021 despite spending significantly less on actual food. This marks Mahamud as the 79th individual charged in this extensive investigation, which federal authorities classify as one of the most significant pandemic-era fraud cases in the U.S., involving misappropriated funds estimated at around $250 million or more.
In the latest charges, prosecutors accuse her of defrauding Minnesota’s Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), designed to aid low-income families with daycare expenses. From October 2022 to December 2025, it is alleged that her center made over 13,000 fraudulent claims amounting to nearly $4.6 million.
These claims were deemed false since Mahamud claimed that necessary parent co-payments had been collected when, in fact, they had not. Reportedly, in 2025 alone, her center received a state-high of $3.7 million in CCAP funds.

Prosecutors have described the situation in court documents as involving wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States. One filing highlights that Mahamud “falsely certified that she had collected mandatory co-payments from families, which is essential for federal reimbursement.”
In January 2026, the daycare closed after state investigations raised concerns about cleanliness, facility conditions, and operations beyond what was permitted under license terms, according to a local report from KMSP.
Mahamud’s daycare attracted media attention from a viral investigation by journalist Nick Shirley, who released a 42-minute video titled “I Investigated Minnesota’s Billion Dollar Fraud Scandal” in late December 2025.
This video featured Shirley and an associate visiting various childcare facilities, including Future Leaders Early Learning, which seemed vacant while filming. Shirley alleged substantial fraud systems within Somali-operated centers receiving funds without providing the promised services. The video garnered millions of views on YouTube and over 100 million on X, attracting comments from figures such as Vice President JD Vance.
In response, state officials stated that the daycare centers in question were licensed and had passed recent inspections, with no immediate signs of fraud found at the time. However, the video prompted escalated scrutiny, including surprise state checks, a freeze on federal funding amounting to around $185 million in childcare assistance to Minnesota, and increased law enforcement activity, leading to the swift closure of Future Leaders.
Mahamud was apprehended in February 2026 while attempting to board an international flight, according to reports. She now faces ongoing proceedings concerning both the nutrition program and CCAP allegations. Additionally, federal authorities have charged others in related schemes, including another daycare operator accused of inflating staffing hours and claims.
