California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has called for a sweeping 100% tax on individuals in the state who accept funds from President Trump’s newly established Anti-Weaponization Fund. He contends that this measure is necessary to thwart what he perceives as potential financial gains for Trump’s associates.
During a recent press conference, Newsom stated, “Anyone from California that receives any of those funds, we want to tax 100% of those proceeds. It’s an action we look forward to taking.”
This proposal targets the $1.776 billion fund announced by the Justice Department, associated with Trump and the IRS. While supporters argue it’s available for anyone unfairly targeted, critics believe it may benefit individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol incident.
In a post on X, Newsom linked the fund to Trump’s past pardons, claiming, “He pardoned all of those folks that were beating up cops and absolved them.” He emphasizes that this funding mechanism is inappropriate and must be addressed.
Newsom’s firm stance coincides with his growing visibility as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, as national Democrats aim to steer attention away from their own challenges and towards Trump’s ongoing legal issues.
However, Republicans criticize Newsom for what they assert is hypocrisy, referencing California’s contentious handling of state funds. This includes a $25 million legal fund supported by Newsom to combat what he termed legal aggressions from the Trump administration, which some have labeled a “slush fund.”
Moreover, the administration has faced scrutiny over no-bid contracts awarded during the COVID-19 pandemic, with investigations revealing that billions went to companies associated with donors and political allies, raising serious concerns about transparency.
Amidst these controversies, California is also grappling with a projected $2.9 billion deficit for the 2027 fiscal budget. Critics point out that many of Newsom’s major initiatives, like the high-speed rail project, have significantly exceeded their original budgets, eliciting further public discontent.
Democrats from other states are following suit, as some have introduced legislation aimed at blocking the Anti-Weaponization Fund. Similar 100% tax proposals have emerged, highlighting growing opposition to the fund’s implementation.
Reports indicate that media outlets have reached out to both the White House and Newsom’s office for further comments on this contentious topic.
