New Revelations Expose Bias in 2019 Impeachment Whistleblower Case

Newly released documents are bringing to the forefront one of the major questions regarding the Democrats’ impeachment efforts against President Donald Trump in 2019: Who truly initiated the whistleblower complaint, and was it inherently political?

The evidence shows that Michael Atkinson, the former intelligence community inspector general who expedited the process, was aware the whistleblower was a registered Democrat with connections to Joe Biden. Nevertheless, he declared to Congress that the complaint was urgent and seemed credible.

These records indicate that the anonymous whistleblower engaged with Democratic staff from then-House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff’s office prior to lodging the complaint in August 2019. This interaction was not disclosed to investigators or on any whistleblower forms.

The documents, exceeding 350 pages, were made available by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford following their declassification by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard late last week. Sources within the Justice Department mention that these revelations are part of an ongoing grand jury investigation into a purported conspiracy by Obama and Biden administration officials targeting Trump.

Atkinson’s formal notification of the whistleblower’s complaint to Schiff in September 2019 triggered actions that ultimately led to Trump’s first impeachment, which stemmed from a contentious phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In the call, the whistleblower claimed Trump had engaged in a criminal act, saying, “I would like you to do us a favor,” and urged Ukraine to investigate the Burisma controversy involving Biden’s son. Democrats subsequently alleged that Trump withheld aid as leverage, a claim he has consistently denied.

The newly unsealed records reveal that Atkinson advanced the complaint despite misgivings about the credibility of secondhand information. They also characterize the complaint as “second-hand hearsay,” noting that the whistleblower was not present during the call and relied on the accounts of others.

Atkinson had a contentious relationship with then-acting DNI Joseph Maguire, who received a legal opinion from the DOJ that deemed the complaint did not meet the criteria for an “urgent concern.” This opinion argued that the situation was about “foreign diplomacy,” not intelligence, and questioned the use of hearsay.

Despite this, Atkinson stated, “The complainant’s allegations appear credible to me,” countering any claims of political bias associated with the whistleblower.

Moreover, behind the scenes, Atkinson reached out to the FBI, making a criminal referral regarding the complaint.

He opted to keep the whistleblower’s identity confidential, citing a “request for confidentiality,” yet admitted under questioning that the complainant was a registered Democrat with professional ties to a 2020 presidential contender.

RealClearInvestigations identified the whistleblower as Eric Ciaramella, a CIA-connected analyst known for his loyalty to Biden in matters concerning Ukraine and Russia. These affiliations did not seem to alarm Atkinson, who maintained that there was no evidence of misconduct related to the disclosure.

The records further reveal that the whistleblower did not acknowledge contact with Schiff’s committee on disclosure forms, despite being questioned about potential contacts.

Former House Intelligence member John Ratcliffe, now CIA Director, contends that Schiff’s office coached the whistleblower in filing the complaint while utilizing classification to obscure critical details. Schiff had classified Atkinson’s testimony as “Secret,” restricting the ability of lawmakers to reference it publicly.

In response to media reports exposing interactions between Schiff’s staff and the whistleblower, Schiff claimed he had “misspoken” and insisted there was no intention to mislead.

Ratcliffe, referring to the new documents, stated bluntly, “The whistleblower got caught,” and claimed the individual made false statements in collaboration with Chairman Schiff.
