A quote from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was used against Joe Biden in the majority opinion as the Supreme Court struck down his student loan forgiveness plan.
The six conservative justices ruled against Biden in a 6-3 vote which will effectively shut the program down.
In a 2021 press conference, Pelosi declared, “People think that the President of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness.”
“He does not. He can postpone. He can delay. But he does not have that power. That has to be an act of Congress,” Pelosi insisted.
Those words came back to haunt her as the justices used them as part of their majority opinion, however, Justice Amy Coney Barrett also wrote a concurring opinion.
Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan was announced last year which called for the elimination of up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt for borrowers making less than $125,000 and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients.
Six Republican-led states, as well as two individual borrowers, had brought the pair of lawsuits to the Supreme Court.
While the private plaintiffs’ motions were dismissed due to a lack of standing, Biden v. Nebraska was decided with the ruling.
Benny Johnson shared the 2021 clip of Pelosi’s words in a tweet as he said, “SCOTUS cited Nancy Pelosi in their ruling against Biden’s Student Loan handout.”
