Former First Lady Michelle Obama pulled the race card against former President Donald Trump during her speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, on Tuesday night, accusing Trump of opposing her and former President Barack Obama because of their race.
Gone was the speaker who told Democrats in 2016, “When they go low, we go high.”
Instead, here’s what was said on behalf of Vice President Kamala Harris:
We know folks are gonna do everything they can to distort her truth. My husband and I, sadly, know a little something about this. For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power try to make people fear us.
See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly-educated, successful people who happen to be black.
[Applause]
Who’s gonna tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those “black jobs”?
Trump used the term ‘black jobs’ to describe the jobs held by Black Americans who are now being forced to compete with new migrants in the labor market. His use of the term was not intended to be racist.
The Obamas have harbored long-standing resentment toward Trump for challenging the legitimacy of then-President Obama’s birth certificate. After years of holding off, Obama finally released his original Hawaii birth certificate in 2011, following intense public pressure from Trump.
The rumor that Obama was born outside the U.S. gained traction, possibly unintentionally, due to a mistake by Obama’s own literary agent in the 1990s, who incorrectly claimed he was born overseas.
