Massachusetts’ Dem Governor Threatens to Redistrict in Response to Texas

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey met Tuesday with Texas Democrats who fled their state to block redistricting votes, blaming President Trump, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and AG Ken Paxton for forcing their hand.

But the optics were deeply hypocritical, as Healey’s own state — where over a third of voters supported Republicans — currently sends zero Republicans to Congress.

Healey Joins Fugitive Democrats

Healey appeared alongside Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll and Secretary of State William Galvin in Boston to show support for the Texas Democrats evading a quorum to halt the Lone Star State’s redistricting efforts.

At a press conference, Healey declared:

“Donald Trump, Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton have left us no choice.”

She claimed Texas Republicans were trying to “completely rewrite a map out of nowhere” to silence voters — a charge that rings hollow when compared to her own state’s track record.

No Republicans Left in Massachusetts Congress Delegation

Despite over 1 in 3 Bay Staters voting Republican, Massachusetts has zero Republicans in Congress—a result of aggressive partisan redistricting.

Secretary Galvin even joked:

“We have no Republicans to give.”

That’s no laughing matter to voters shut out of representation.

Meanwhile, Healey claimed she wants all voters’ voices to count, saying:

“Whether you vote for me or not, I want your voice to count.”

If that’s true, Massachusetts Democrats should look in the mirror and consider whether their own redistricting practices truly reflect the will of the people.

Abbott: “There are consequences for dereliction of duty”

Back in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has taken a firm stand against the fleeing Democrats, ordering their arrest to restore quorum and allow votes to proceed.

“Texas House Democrats are holding hostage critical legislation to aid flood victims and advance property tax relief,” Abbott said. “There are consequences for dereliction of duty.”
