Mamdani Plummets in New Poll as Republican Long Shot Surges

A new poll shows support for New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani may be declining just one week after his upset primary win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

According to the latest HarrisX survey, Mamdani—a democratic socialist and State Assemblyman—has dropped 14 percentage points from his high-water mark, while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa gained 12 points in the same period.

Polling Breakdown

The HarrisX poll, conducted July 7–8 with 585 registered voters, shows the race in a statistical tie:

If Mayor Eric Adams drops out of the race, the numbers tighten even further:

  • Cuomo: 31%

  • Mamdani: 29%

  • Sliwa: 28%

The poll’s margin of error is ±4.1%.

Momentum Shift

The poll reflects a significant change from an earlier survey by Data for Progress conducted July 1–6, where Mamdani led with 40% support among likely voters. In that poll:

  • Mamdani: 40%

  • Cuomo: 24%

  • Adams: 15%

  • Sliwa: 14%

Mamdani’s recent viral comments—including support for the “abolition of private property”—may be playing a role in shifting voter sentiment. One clip shows him suggesting it would be acceptable to eliminate private property rights in favor of a “statewide housing guarantee.”

Trump and Sliwa Weigh In

President Donald Trump commented on the race Tuesday, calling Mamdani a “communist” and suggesting that Cuomo “has a shot” in a crowded field.

Meanwhile, Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels and 2021 GOP mayoral nominee, is positioning himself as the mainstream candidate.

“I’m a proud Republican,” Sliwa said during an interview on Fox News. “We’ll fight the socialists, we’ll fight the Democrats.”

Sliwa added that his strategy is to “go to the people in the streets, the people who pay the taxes, the people who work, the blue-collar working class.”
