MAGA Representative Criticizes Senators for Delaying SAVE Act

U.S. Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) has voiced her frustrations with the Senate’s decision-making after Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) retracted plans to support the popular election integrity legislation, labeling its supporters as ‘paid influencers.’

Thune had previously mentioned considering the use of the “talking” filibuster, an older Senate procedure requiring dissenters to debate legislation actively. This process imposes greater challenges on opposing members, subjecting them to limited speaking opportunities and potential exhaustion.

Currently, senators can impede legislation unless it garners 60 votes, a situation colloquially referred to as the “zombie” filibuster.

If the talking filibuster isn’t employed, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, a House-approved measure aimed at bolstering election integrity with voter ID mandates, may not succeed. Under the talking filibuster, it could move forward with a simple majority, potentially supported by Vice President JD Vance.

Rep. Luna has emerged as a leading advocate for the bill in the House and criticized Senate Republicans for their inaction on the widely supported legislation. “The Senate is corrupt,” she expressed on X.

“Many senators are influenced by corporate interests. Why oppose a crucial issue like voter ID? The President knows how vital VOTER ID is,” she remarked. Luna also suggested a commitment from herself and various House Republicans to take measures if the Senate fails to act.

“FISA is crucial legislation that must be passed. The House MUST ATTACH the SAVE AMERICA ACT to FISA,” she asserted, referring to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, a significant yet contentious law concerning surveillance on individuals suspected of being linked to foreign threats.

The legislation requires regular renewal.

The SAVE Act mandates that individuals present documentary evidence of U.S. citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, when registering to vote in federal elections. The bill aims to amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 by requiring states to verify citizenship in person and forbidding registration without such documentation.

Additionally, it instructs states to set up alternative procedures for those lacking standard documents and improves the maintenance of voter lists to eliminate noncitizens.
