Longstanding Democrat Faces Tough Fight in Key Ohio District

A seasoned House Democrat is beginning this election cycle on uncertain footing in a pivotal Ohio district, as indicated by internal polling from the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The NRCC’s survey of likely voters in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District shows Republican Derek Merrin ahead of Rep. Marcy Kaptur, with 47% to her 43%, and 7% of voters undecided. Libertarian candidate David Gedert trails with 3%.

This early data poses a challenge for the established incumbent. Kaptur’s numbers fall below the critical 50% mark, a threshold often seen as precarious for incumbents as the election season heats up.

Additionally, the survey indicates that Kaptur faces significant disapproval, with 42% of respondents already expressing dissatisfaction with her performance, prior to the official campaign kickoff.

Undecided voters present a particularly grim outlook for Democrats. Of this group, 67% disapprove of Kaptur, and they currently favor Republicans by a ratio of more than two-to-one.

The NRCC memo identifies several demographics where Merrin is leading:

  • Less than college: Merrin 52%, Kaptur 40%
  • Union households: Merrin 49%, Kaptur 43%
  • Voters over 55: Merrin 53%, Kaptur 39%

Republicans contend that these trends indicate a shift toward the right among working-class and middle-class voters, particularly among older individuals and those without college degrees.

Republican Advantage in Generic Ballot

The NRCC also reported results from a generic ballot in the district, showing Republicans with a slim edge over Democrats, 48% to 45%, with 8% undecided.

This data serves as an initial glance at a broader political landscape that could place multiple House Democrats in challenging positions as November approaches.
