Lizzo Weighs in on Sydney Sweeney Ad with Jeans Image, Gets Dragged by Followers

Lizzo drew backlash this week after she appeared to mock American Eagle’s viral Sydney Sweeney campaign, posting an AI-generated image of herself in full denim alongside the caption:

“My jeans are black.”

The image also included the text:

“If the Democrats won the election.”

“This Is Embarrassing”

Commenters flooded Lizzo’s Instagram post calling the image divisive and unnecessary:

  • “Lizzo this is embarrassing. Sydney being the face of the ad doesn’t take away from other ethnicities or beauty. Get real.”

  • “So companies are no longer allowed to use any white models to model their products?”

  • “This promotes division and smells of racism and relevancy. Do better.”

Critics also noted that Lizzo failed to credit or tag the image’s original creator, Instagram user Kevin Flynn, who runs the “whitepeoplehumor” account. She also cropped out his watermark from the version she posted.

The Ad That Triggered the Left

The controversy centers around American Eagle’s fall denim campaign, which features actress Sydney Sweeney, 27, posing in denim next to a sports car. The ad went viral after critics — mostly from left-wing media outlets and influencers — accused it of being racially coded and even likened it to “Nazi propaganda.”

One clip from the ad shows Sweeney saying:

“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”

Leftist outlets like Salon claimed the ad glorified “eugenics”, simply because of Sweeney’s blonde hair and blue eyes. The bizarre accusations sparked widespread debate online, dividing viewers along ideological lines.

American Eagle Fires Back

Rather than fold under the pressure, American Eagle issued a firm statement defending both Sweeney and the campaign:

“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story.”
