Legal Expert Warns Democrat Investigations May Backfire

Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz has raised concerns that the Democrats’ threats of legal investigations against Republican figures may ultimately backfire.

Following their control of the House after the 2026 midterms, Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA) urged Republicans and officials from the Trump Administration to "Lawyer up." As the incoming chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Garcia plans to delve into the Trump family’s business activities and review actions taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as well as the Jeffrey Epstein case’s disclosure.

In interviews, Garcia asserted that the election results indicated a demand for accountability. He stated that investigating the Trump family, amid claims of corruption, would be a primary focus. Garcia highlighted bipartisan interest in the Epstein matters, emphasizing the seriousness of the inquiries.

Dershowitz shared his insights during a segment on Newsmax’s The Record with Greta Van Susteren. He likened Garcia’s remarks to tactics used by historical figures famous for political repression, suggesting that Democrats may not genuinely care about legality but rather seek to exploit their newfound power against rivals.

He termed this approach "lawfare," a practice he claims has long been employed by Democrats. Dershowitz lamented over what he perceives as an unconstitutional conviction of Trump, which he believes will be overturned on appeal. He warns that these tactics could further threaten political rivals.

On the legal ramifications of Garcia’s statements, Dershowitz indicated that courts might consider them indicative of an intention among Democrats to target Republicans, especially if challenged legally.
