The Los Angeles Police Department has withdrawn officers from former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Brentwood home after public backlash.
City resources had been redirected to guard Harris once President Donald Trump revoked her extended Secret Service protection.
Trump Revokes Protection
Former vice presidents typically receive Secret Service coverage for six months after leaving office.
President Joe Biden extended Harris’ coverage past the July 21 deadline.

Trump later revoked the extension, bringing her protection in line with other former vice presidents.
LAPD Steps In
Instead of arranging private security, Harris received local taxpayer-funded protection.
Mayor Karen Bass directed LAPD to assist the California Highway Patrol in guarding her Brentwood home.

Bass called Trump’s decision “political retaliation.”
Public Backlash
Criticism mounted after reports revealed officers had been diverted from crimefighting units.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League blasted the decision.
“Pulling police officers from protecting everyday Angelenos to protect a failed presidential candidate who also happens to be a multi-millionaire … and who can easily afford to pay for her own security, is nuts,” the board said.
Calls for Accountability
The union urged Bass to tell Gov. Gavin Newsom to cover Harris’ costs if he wanted to show her political favor.
“LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness,” the group added.
Newsom’s office did not confirm the arrangement but claimed the safety of officials should not be subject to “vindictive political impulse.”
Harris’ Next Move
The city’s security support was expected to be temporary until Harris secured private protection.

The timing drew further criticism as Harris promotes her memoir, 107 Days, recounting her short-lived presidential run.
Residents argued she should pay for her own detail while enjoying multimillion-dollar book deals and speaking tours.
