JUST IN: Suspect Confirmed Dead In CBP-Involved Shooting In Minneapolis

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed Saturday that a man who was shot by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents during an attempted arrest in Minneapolis has died.

The incident occurred around 9:05 a.m. CT in the Whittier neighborhood, near the intersection of 26th Street West and Nicollet Avenue, close to Glam Doll Donuts on what is known as “Eat Street,” according to a report from local outlet KARE. Immigration agents with CBP and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have swarmed the city in recent weeks as part of Operation Metro Surge, which the Trump Administration is referring to as the largest immigration operation in U.S. history.

Witness accounts and video footage indicate that federal agents were attempting to make an arrest when a struggle ensued. According to a statement from DHS, the suspect, identified as a 51-year-old man, pulled out a 9mm handgun during the shooting.

“The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. More details on the armed struggle are forthcoming,” DHS said. “Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots. Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject but was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The suspect was reportedly carrying two magazines and was not carrying an ID. “This looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement,” the department added.

Almost immediately after the shooting, a crowd of about 200 protesters gathered around the shooting scene and proceeded to chant “ICE out now!”

The situation quickly devolved into a riot, as the mob began to toss rocks and other projectiles at federal agents. Additional protesters set up a makeshift barricade using planters, trash cans and whatever large objects they can find about a block away from the shooting site.

A small contingent of Minnesota State Police are also on scene as of 11:45 a.m. local time. Police have declared an unlawful assembly, though the crowd continues to grow while rioters attempt to move forward, Fox News reported from the scene.

This is a developing story. Additional details will be provided as they become available.
