Former U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) announced Tuesday the passing of his older sister, Janet Manchin Thompson, at the age of 80. She died peacefully on Sunday, surrounded by her family, according to a heartfelt statement Manchin posted on Instagram.
“It is with heavy hearts that Gayle and I share that my sister, Janet Manchin Thompson… passed away peacefully on Sunday, surrounded by her loving family,” Manchin wrote.
“She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and a zest for life that will never be forgotten.”
A Life Rooted in Family and Faith
Janet was married to Commander Robert G. Thompson for 56 years until his passing. Together, they built a life of service, family, and community. Manchin described his sister as a “force of nature” and a dedicated partner.

A Passion for Hospitality
Janet pursued her passion for food by working alongside chefs and managing restaurant operations, creating a legacy in the kitchen as well as at home.
“Her recipes and ability to turn any gathering into an event will continue to be a source of comfort, tradition, and connection for generations to come,” Manchin shared.
The family encouraged loved ones to share or donate a meal in her honor, reflecting her lifelong commitment to serving others.
A Political Chapter Closed
Joe Manchin served in the U.S. Senate from 2010 to 2025, deciding not to seek re-election in 2024 after polling showed a likely loss to Republican Governor Jim Justice. In May 2024, Manchin left the Democratic Party, registering as an independent, saying he wanted to help “bring the country together.”
Though increasingly at odds with the modern Democratic Party, Manchin remained a prominent centrist figure, often sought for bipartisan negotiations and key votes.
