In a shocking incident at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, the gunman, identified as Mohamed Jalloh, opened fire on Thursday. Jalloh, a former National Guardsman, has a troubling history, having been convicted for providing material support to the Islamic State (ISIS).
Karol Markowicz, a contributor to the New York Post, revealed the shooter’s identity via a post on X, confirming that he is indeed the same individual who faced charges related to ISIS support. Markowicz stated, āIām reliably informed that the alleged attacker of Old Dominion is Mohamed Jalloh, the same Jalloh who was convicted of providing support to ISIL.ā
No official confirmation has been made by law enforcement or university officials regarding the attacker’s identity as of yet.
If this information is correct, it connects the shooting to a man previously convicted of terrorism-related offenses. In 2016, Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, aged 26 at the time, was apprehended for attempting to offer material aid to ISIS. He eventually pled guilty and received an 11-year prison sentence, followed by five years of supervised release.
According to court documents, Jalloh, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Sierra Leone, had left the National Guard after being influenced by radical lectures from the notorious cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.
The chaotic scene unfolded on the morning of March 12, 2026, within Constant Hall, an academic facility that offers courses in business and public administration. Eyewitnesses reported that the shooting started shortly before 11:00 a.m. ET as a class was underway. One student recounted how the gunman entered, asked about the professor, and then opened fire.
At least two victims were wounded and are currently in critical condition. Responding officers from both ODU Police and the Norfolk Police Department confronted the gunman, who was pronounced dead following the exchange, as reported by NBC News.
The investigation is being spearheaded by the Norfolk Police Department, with federal agencies lending support. No official terrorism designation has yet been confirmed, but further details are anticipated during a press conference scheduled for later today.
