Is a Baseball Curse Affecting the NY Mets After Mayor’s Visit?

Fans of the New York Mets are beginning to think that Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s recent visit could be the reason behind a baseball curse, as the team faced their 10th consecutive defeat on Saturday night.

Following the 4-2 setback against the Chicago Cubs, the Mets’ record has dropped dramatically to 7-14. The pain of this loss amplifies considering the team’s substantial payroll and high-profile offseason signings, which many expected would make them contenders for the World Series.

The Mets haven’t celebrated a victory since they narrowly beat the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 7. After suffering a 7-2 defeat to the Diamondbacks the very next day, Mayor Mamdani commemorated his 100th day in office with a visit to Citi Field.

During this visit, footage revealed Mamdani joyfully embracing Mr. Met, the beloved mascot, before engaging with stadium personnel. He described his appearance as a way to acknowledge those “behind every New York Mets game,” opting for a low-key approach.

While the team’s downturn began before Mamdani’s visit, some fans are attributing the current misfortunes to the so-called “Mamdani curse.”

“The Mets have not won a single game since Zohran Mamdani visited Citified & cursed the team. The Mets have now lost 5 straight games & were swept by the A’s for the 1st time in team history. What do the Mets need to do to lift the Mamdani curse?” wrote one frustrated fan during the team’s losing streak.

“It’s a good time to remember that since socialist mayorista Mamdani hugged Mr. and Mrs. Met, the New York Metropolitans have lost 10 games in a row,” noted another supporter. “Many are calling it the Mamdani curse.”

Though the idea of the “Mamdani Mets” may resonate as an amusing meme rooted in baseball folklore, there have long been whispers of political influences affecting the team’s offseason strategy. For instance, superstar Francisco Lindor’s wife has openly supported the mayor and was appointed to his transition team late last year.

Leading up to the season, renowned sports radio host Mike Francesca suggested that the departure of popular slugger Brandon Nimmo — now thriving with the Texas Rangers — stemmed from politically-inflected disagreements with Lindor.

“The Nimmo-Lindor thing, my understanding, was political, had to do with Trump. One side liked Trump, one side didn’t like Trump,” he claimed.

Despite these rumors, Lindor refuted claims concerning Nimmo’s departure and other trades involving long-standing Mets players. “Nimmo and I are brothers. I love him. He’s a great guy. He’s missed around here. Good teammate, good person, good family man,” he stated to baseball insider Jon Heyman recently.
