Outrage erupted at the United Nations on Monday after Iran was handed a leadership slot at a major nuclear treaty conference, drawing sharp condemnation from the United States and public backing from allies including the United Arab Emirates and Australia.
Selected as one of 34 vice presidents at the monthlong review conference for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran’s role has been criticized by the U.S. as granting Tehran unwarranted legitimacy amidst ongoing concerns regarding its nuclear program.
U.S. Reactions and Concerns
The 11th Review Conference of the NPT opened at U.N. headquarters in New York, with 191 treaty parties convening to examine compliance with the pact intended to prevent nuclear weapon proliferation. Iran’s leadership role emerged through the Non-Aligned Movement bloc.
U.S. Assistant Secretary for Arms Control and Nonproliferation Christopher Yeaw expressed strong disapproval, stating from the floor, “Rather than choosing to use this review conference to defend the integrity of the NPT and call Iran to account, we instead elect Iran a vice president. It is beyond shameful and an embarrassment to the credibility of this conference.”
Support for the American stance came from the UAE and Australia, with Britain, France, and Germany also expressing their concerns, amplifying the coalition opposing Iran’s procedural ascent.
Escalating U.N. Tensions
This incident follows Iran’s recent appointment to the Committee for Program and Coordination within the United Nations Economic and Social Council, a move that raised eyebrows globally. The U.S. was the only nation to formally object at that time.
In response to the backlash, Iran’s envoy Reza Najafi labeled the criticism as “baseless and politically motivated,” arguing against U.S. hypocrisy while defending their right to pursue peaceful nuclear development. Russia also backed Iran, criticizing the politicization of the conference.
🚨 WTF?! The United Nations has chosen the Islamic Republic of IRAN to be a Vice President of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Review Conference
WHAT?
The UN is an actual joke.
Iran is the LAST country that should be in a role like this.

U.N. Leadership Accountability
U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric clarified that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has no role in electing member states to leadership positions at conferences. He emphasized that member states are accountable for their elections.
Moving forward, Dujarric stressed the importance of maintaining focus on the core mission of the conference: curbing the global threat of nuclear weapons.
Broader Implications of Iran’s Appointment
Concerns are escalating as Western governments and the International Atomic Energy Agency highlight Iran’s uranium enrichment initiatives nearing weapons-grade levels, amidst disputes regarding inspections. Tehran maintains that its program is strictly civilian.
Critics note that Iran’s appointment underscores ongoing credibility issues within the U.N., where geopolitical maneuvering can place countries under scrutiny in positions of authority at crucial conferences.
According to Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, Iran’s selection exemplifies a troubling trend of gaining senior roles within the U.N. system, undermining the integrity of international institutions and reinforcing beliefs that political expediency trumps fundamental standards.
The last NPT review conference in 2022 was marred by a lack of consensus due to Russian obstruction, showcasing the intensifying divisions among global powers and the challenges ahead.
