Iran Shocks World with Execution of Young Wrestler

The Iranian government has drawn widespread condemnation following the execution of a 19-year-old wrestling star, Saleh Mohammadi. Activists report that he was publicly executed due to his protests.

This execution, described as barbaric, has ignited outrage among human rights advocates and the Iranian-American wrestling community. Despite international warnings, the regime proceeded with Mohammadi’s death on Thursday.

Many observers see this act as a continuation of the government’s oppressive tactics under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Nima Far, a prominent combat athlete and activist, labeled the execution as politically motivated, part of a disturbing trend targeting athletes like Mohammadi.

Far criticized international sports organizations for their lack of timely intervention. He emphasized that the International Olympic Committee and the United World Wrestling should adopt a firmer stance, threatening suspension of Iran’s National Olympic Committee if executions continued.

Following Mohammadi’s sentencing, both organizations only released statements under pressure. Far advocates for Iran’s ban from global competitions unless it ceases executing athletes and releasing jailed individuals.

Outrage has spread among analysts and observers, including Alizreza Nader, who expressed concern over the harsh conditions athletes endure in Iran. He noted the need for serious consequences for the regime, stressing that a significant deterrent is vital.

Masih Alinejad, another activist, echoed these sentiments, indicating that the regime’s actions prove its defiance amid international scrutiny. She highlighted the contradiction in the regime’s previous promises to stop executing protesters.

Alinejad brings attention to the broader implications of Mohammadi’s execution, stating that it reflects systemic injustices faced by athletes in Iran. She called for international solidarity against the regime’s human rights violations.

Earlier this year, the U.S. State Department had issued warnings concerning Mohammadi’s potential execution, expressing deep concern over the Iranian regime’s treatment of young people.
