The Indian Government released the following statement cofgriming the assault:

A little while ago, the Indian armed forces launched ‘OPERATION SINDOOR’, hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed.

The Indian Defense Ministry also released a statement confirming the attack, saying it came in response to a previous terror attack launched by Pakistani forces:

These steps come in the wake of the barbaric Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were murdered. Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted.

India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution.

A total of nine targets were terror targets were reportedly hit in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Missiles were confirmed to have been fired at Kotli, Muzaffarabad, and Bahawalpur in Pakistan.

As CNN notes, Pakistani military spokesperson Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry has vowed revenge for the attack.

“Pakistan will respond to it at a time and place of its own choosing,” he said. “This heinous provocation will not go unanswered.”

The attack killed 26 people and triggered outrage in Hindu-majority India, along with calls for action against Muslim-majority Pakistan.
