Ilhan Omar is facing intense scrutiny after she failed to appear at a Minnesota legislative hearing investigating potential links to a significant COVID-era fraud case.
State Rep. Kristin Robbins, a Republican and chair of the House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee, sent a letter on April 22 expressing disappointment at Omar’s absence from a meeting she was invited to. This hearing aimed to discuss the MEALS Act, a federal COVID relief measure that Omar was instrumental in creating.
Robbins’ letter highlighted that Omar’s office did not respond to the invitation, prompting her to request documents detailing communications related to the expanded meal program. Specifically, officials are looking for records involving the Minnesota Department of Education and various constituents.
Robbins also raised concerns about Omar’s promotion of the Safari Restaurant, which was later linked to the program. The letter pointed out a Somali-language TV appearance where Omar showcased the restaurant as a meal distribution site, asking for related communications.
During a recent hearing, lawmakers presented clips related to Omar’s connections with individuals from the Somali community implicated in the scandal. Robbins remarked, “She didn’t even respond, ghosted us.”
Omar has not provided any responses to multiple outreach attempts made by the committee, according to Robbins. The document request further includes records of any interactions Omar had with individuals charged in the Feeding Our Future case and the political donations she has received from them.
Robbins, who is also competing for the role of Minnesota governor, has requested that Omar submit the necessary materials by May 5.
This letter is part of a growing Republican investigation into Feeding Our Future, which has been accused of misappropriating hundreds of millions in taxpayer funds meant for child nutrition during the pandemic.
As Omar confronts these allegations, she also faces renewed attention regarding her financial disclosures, which have attracted criticism from national Republican figures.
