ICE Agent Who Opened Fire In Minneapolis Was Nearly Killed by Illegal Migrant Last Year

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good during a confrontation in Minneapolis was previously the victim of a violent assault that left him hospitalized after being dragged by a vehicle driven by an illegal migrant, according to multiple reports.

The officer involved in Wednesday’s shooting has been identified by several outlets as Jonathan Ross, a veteran agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Federal officials say Ross was acting in self-defense when he opened fire during a chaotic encounter that erupted amid an ICE enforcement operation in south Minneapolis.

Less than a year earlier, Ross survived a harrowing incident that authorities now say is relevant to understanding the danger he faced in the fatal shooting of Good.

In June 2025, Ross was seriously injured during a traffic stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, when an undocumented immigrant allegedly attempted to flee while the agent’s arm was trapped inside the vehicle. The suspect, identified as Roberto Carlos Munoz-Guatemala, reportedly accelerated with the agent still attached, dragging him approximately 100 yards before Ross was able to break free according to the New York Post.

According to federal prosecutors, Munoz-Guatemala weaved the vehicle back and forth in an apparent effort to dislodge the agent. Ross was rushed to a hospital with severe injuries to his arm and hand and required dozens of stitches. He later made a full recovery.

Munoz-Guatemala, described by authorities as a Guatemalan national with a criminal history, was arrested and charged in the assault. He was convicted by a federal jury in December 2025 on charges related to attacking a federal officer.

That prior incident has now been cited by Department of Homeland Security officials as context in the fatal Minneapolis shooting involving Good. Federal leaders argue that Ross’s experience with life-threatening encounters informed his reaction when he was confronted by a vehicle advancing toward him during last week’s operation.

Good, a 37-year-old mother, was shot and killed after her vehicle became involved in an altercation with ICE agents on a residential street. Video footage circulating online shows an agent standing in front of her car moments before shots were fired. DHS officials have said Good ignored commands to stop and exit the vehicle.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the agent’s actions, stating that Ross acted lawfully and in self-defense. She described the situation as volatile and said federal officers were attempting to carry out enforcement duties amid interference from hostile individuals.

DHS has characterized Good’s actions as threatening, while local officials and immigration advocacy groups have disputed that assessment. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and several civil rights organizations have called for an independent investigation into the shooting.

President Donald Trump also weighed in on the incident, backing federal authorities and reiterating support for ICE agents enforcing immigration law under his administration. The shooting remains under investigation as protests and political fallout continue to ripple across Minneapolis.
