Heroic American Tourist Stabbed While Protecting 2 Women in Germany

John Rudat, a 21-year-old American tourist and part-time model from upstate New York, was stabbed on a tram in Dresden, Germany, after stepping in to protect two women who were being assaulted. The newly qualified paramedic was left with severe facial injuries during the altercation early Sunday.

According to German outlet Bild, Rudat intervened when two men attacked the women. One of the suspects, a 21-year-old Syrian national, was arrested but later released by prosecutors who said there was insufficient evidence to connect him to the stabbing. Authorities confirmed the man is a known local drug dealer.

Family Reaction

Rudat’s brother Logan said the family wasn’t surprised by his actions.

“I would have been surprised if he hadn’t stepped in,” Logan told The New York Post, adding that his brother’s character reflects their upbringing as first responders. The family hopes Rudat will return to the U.S. within the week.

Survivor’s Statement

Despite his injuries, Rudat posted a video on Instagram condemning his attackers and criticizing German immigration policies.

“If y’all didn’t think Europe had an immigration problem, especially Germany, let me drop some knowledge on you,” he said, pointing out that one of the suspects was released within hours. “Where is the law? Where is the structure?”

U.S. Embassy Response

The U.S. Embassy in Germany released a statement urging justice:

“We urge German authorities to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice and punish them to the fullest extent permitted by law. Safety is a collective responsibility—no one is safe until all are safe.”

Community Support

Back in New York, Rudat’s family and friends launched a GoFundMe campaign to support his recovery. His brother praised the outpouring of solidarity: “Everyone has been incredibly supportive of him,” Logan said.
