The incident involved an Air Canada Express CRJ-900 arriving from Montreal and a Port Authority fire truck. Tragically, both the pilot and co-pilot lost their lives in the impact.

Passenger Jack Cabot recounted the frightening moments following touchdown. He described a hard landing that resulted in chaos: “The plane landed pretty hard, you heard a loud bang and suddenly everything was out of control. The plane was veering back and forth.”
In response to the tragedy, the Federal Aviation Administration imposed a ground stop at LaGuardia. Officials have indicated that the airport may remain closed until 2 p.m. on Monday as emergency crews continue their work.

By late morning, travelers were seen seated in the terminals with luggage around them, anxiously awaiting updates on flights. The airport, which was largely deserted earlier, slowly began to see an influx of travelers hoping to resume their journeys.
Even at midday, security lines remained minimal as operations cautiously progressed toward the airport’s planned reopening. However, the departure board was mostly filled with cancellations, with only a few flights showing new departure times as the updated schedule emerged.

This incident marks the first fatal accident at LaGuardia since 1992. Audio communications from the tower are under scrutiny, with reports suggesting that air traffic controllers may have been distracted by a prior incident. Investigators are expected to analyze communications and on-field procedures to uncover how an emergency vehicle and passenger jet collided.
