Republican Harriet Hageman secured a significant victory in the open-seat race for Wyoming’s U.S. Senate, overcoming Democrat James Byrd. As the current representative in the House, she will take over for Cynthia Lummis, who opted not to run for a second term.
At 64 years old, Hageman has deep roots in Wyoming, growing up on a ranch near Fort Laramie. Her career spans over three decades as a trial attorney before she ventured into politics.
She previously sought the governor’s office in 2018 but was not successful and has served as a member of the Republican National Committee.
Her notable rise came in 2022 when she won Trump’s endorsement, which helped her defeat incumbent Liz Cheney in the Republican primary for Wyoming’s at-large House seat. Hageman has been a steadfast advocate for Trump’s agenda, including tax reforms and border security.
Historically, Wyoming has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in over half a century. According to the Cook Political Report, the state’s voting tendencies heavily favor Republicans, highlighting a robust conservative landscape.
Cynthia Lummis, having won her Senate seat in 2020 with approximately 73 percent of the vote, has been a significant political figure for decades. She cited the demanding schedule of the Senate as a key reason for her decision to retire.
