Gunman Arrested At U.S. Capitol

A man who appeared to be armed was arrested Tuesday morning near the U.S. Capitol, authorities said, with police stressing there was no ongoing threat.

U.S. Capitol Police said officers took the individual into custody near the West Front of the Capitol Building. No other suspects were being sought.

Officials urged the public to steer clear of the Lower West Terrace as officers secured the scene and gathered evidence.

USCP wrote on X, “Our officers just arrested a person with what appears to be a gun near the West Front of the U.S. Capitol Building. Please avoid the area. We will provide more information when new information is confirmed.”

Maryland Avenue was temporarily shut down between First and Third Streets Southwest during the investigation, police said.

Further details about the suspect and the circumstances surrounding the arrest were not immediately released.

Veteran reporter Jamie Dupree shared a picture to X showing exactly where the suspected gunman was arrested by Capitol police.
