Governor Tim Walz Facing Impeachment Challenges from Minnesota GOP

Minnesota’s GOP lawmakers are taking steps to impeach Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison through two resolutions. These measures allege misconduct linked to fraud and law enforcement controversies.

House Resolution 6 targets Walz, while House Resolution 7 focuses on Ellison. The resolutions claim both officials engaged in “corrupt conduct,” with Ellison facing allegations of “crimes and misdemeanors,” based on remarks made on the House floor.

The resolution against Walz asserts he mishandled Minnesota’s significant fraud scandals. It accuses him of breaking his constitutional duties to enforce state laws, highlighted by troubling media reports on public funds being misappropriated and subsequent investigations that have put state agencies in a negative light.

On the other hand, the resolution concerning Ellison criticizes his response to immigration enforcement and the actions of protesters. It claims he has been “undermining” the FACE Act, particularly due to his support for anti-ICE demonstrators and journalists at a St. Paul church. The resolution also notes his meeting with individuals involved in the Feeding Our Future fraud case.

This impeachment effort is reminiscent of a previous attempt in 2021, where Republicans sought to challenge Walz over his COVID-19 emergency declaration. That initiative lost momentum due to the Democratic majority in both legislative chambers.

Currently, the numbers remain daunting for the GOP.

According to Minnesota’s constitution, officials can be impeached for “corrupt conduct in office or for crimes and misdemeanors.” Impeachment requires a majority vote in the House before proceeding to the Senate for a trial, which demands a two-thirds majority for a conviction.

The House is equally divided at 67-67, meaning Republicans will need full party support and at least one Democrat to vote with them to send the impeachment articles to the Senate. With Democrats holding a slim majority in the Senate, achieving a two-thirds conviction is unlikely.

As the political landscape evolves, Walz has stepped back from seeking re-election, while Ellison is pursuing his third term as attorney general.

For the moment, these resolutions serve as a significant message from the GOP and test whether any Democrats might break ranks. Without bipartisan support, the chances of these impeachment efforts progressing are slim.
