GOP Politician And His Family ‘Targeted’ In Drive-By Shooting

Multiple gunshots hit the home of a Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners candidate Monday night while he and his family were inside, the candidate said Tuesday.

Aaron Marin, a Republican running for the District 1 seat, said in a social media post that the shots were “intentionally directed only at our house” while he was home with his wife and two young sons.

“By God’s grace, we are all safe and unharmed — but as a husband and father, there are no words to describe the shock of hearing gunfire directed at your home,” Marin wrote.

Marin said the Huntersville Police Department responded along with crime scene investigators. Police did not immediately respond to a request for additional information.

The candidate said he would not speculate about who was responsible or the motive, citing the active investigation.

“Violence has no place in our community or in our political process,” Marin wrote. “Differences must be resolved peacefully, through dialogue and the democratic process — not through violence.”

Marin is the only Republican candidate for the District 1 Mecklenburg County Commission seat in the 2026 race. He previously ran in 2024, losing to Elaine Powell.

“I will not be intimidated,” Marin said. “My commitment to serving Mecklenburg County and protecting our community remains stronger than ever.”

Authorities have not released details about potential suspects or whether a motive has been determined.

The shooting comes amid heightened concerns nationwide about threats and violence tied to politics. In recent years, elected officials, candidates, and public servants from primarily the GOP have faced harassment, intimidation, and, in some cases, physical attacks.

The 2024 assassination attempt against Donald Trump stunned the country and prompted renewed debate over security for candidates and the toxic tone of political discourse. Lawmakers have also reported increasing threats at their homes and offices, leading to expanded protective measures and calls to cool “fascist” rhetoric on the left.

Experts warn that heated political environments, amplified by social media and deep partisan divides, can raise the risk of real-world confrontations. Community leaders across the country have urged voters and activists alike to reject violence and resolve differences at the ballot box.
