Disney has settled a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by former Star Wars actress Gina Carano, ending a years-long battle that began when she was fired in 2021 over a controversial social media post.
Carano, 43, who played Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, said she lost her role for expressing conservative political beliefs. She had been outspoken against Black Lives Matter, COVID lockdowns, and transgender ideology.
The actress came under fire after posting a photo of a Jewish woman beaten in Nazi-occupied Poland, comparing that hatred to the demonization of conservatives in America today.
“How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?” Carano wrote at the time.
Disney accused her of “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities” and severed ties. She was also dropped by her talent agency.
Lawsuit Backed by Elon Musk
In 2024, Carano sued Disney for wrongful termination and discrimination, seeking damages and reinstatement. The lawsuit was backed by Elon Musk, whose platform X pledged to fund cases of employees fired over posts.
Disney initially moved to dismiss, claiming a First Amendment right not to associate with her statements. Carano responded that Disney had proven they “will fire you if you say anything they disagree with.”
Settlement and Public Praise
In a statement Thursday, Disney softened its tone, praising Carano’s professionalism and expressing interest in working with her again:
“Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff… We look forward to identifying opportunities to work together… in the near future.”
Carano celebrated on X, posting:
“… and the truth shall set you free.”
The settlement closes a chapter in one of the most public entertainment industry disputes over political speech and cancel culture.
