Gavin Newsom’s Spouse Accused of Diverting Funds from Nonprofit Initiative

Last month, Jennifer Siebel Newsom attracted media attention by criticizing reporters at a Planned Parenthood event, claiming they were neglecting the purported “war on women.” However, she is now under investigation regarding her own financial conduct.

According to IRS records obtained by the Daily Mail, Siebel Newsom has compensated herself and her business, Girls Club LLC, a significant portion of the revenues from her nonprofit, The Representation Project. In some instances, these payments approached one-third of the charity’s total income, accumulating over $3.7 million in about ten years.

The Representation Project, which claims to combat “intersectional gender stereotypes” and “harmful gender norms,” typically raises between $1 million and $1.7 million annually through grants and donations. Reports indicate around $300,000 has been allocated to Siebel Newsom and her company in recent years.

The latest financial disclosures show a $150,000 salary for Siebel Newsom and a parallel payment to Girls Club LLC, described as a “writer/director/producer fee.” The LLC retains rights to her documentary Miss Representation and has licensed it to the nonprofit.

Charity watchdogs have flagged these compensation levels as notably high for such a small organization. A conservative transparency advocate remarked that as Gov. Gavin Newsom expands his profile nationally, these revelations could spark concerns among middle-class Americans regarding the true purpose of their charitable efforts.

In analyzing IRS databases, the Daily Mail noted that fewer than 5% of approximately 23,000 nonprofits with revenues between $1 million and $2 million offer their executives as much as The Representation Project does when considering Siebel Newsom’s salary and LLC payments.

Additional salaries disclosed include $150,000 for executive director Caroline Heldman and $131,942 for CFO Debra Garber, with total compensation for the nonprofit nearing $1 million for the year ending March 2024.

While Gov. Newsom is obligated to report spousal income in ethics disclosures, critics pointed out that he often lists such income in broad ranges. Newsom’s communications director, Izzy Gardon, defended this practice, stating it aligns with California regulations.

This situation also rekindles previous ethical concerns about corporate contributions to the nonprofit from firms that later received substantial state contracts, a recurrent issue for the Newsoms.

Neither Siebel Newsom nor her nonprofit has commented on the Daily Mail’s inquiry.
