Fetterman Critiques Democratic Colleagues Amid DHS Standstill: ‘Affordability Is Key’

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) openly expressed his discontent with fellow Democrats as the current partial government shutdown drags on for 41 days, creating chaos in America’s airports.

Fetterman remarked, “From the beginning, I’ve been against these shutdowns. I was one of the few Democrats who opposed the last one as well. Now, it’s clear that TSA agents are suffering week after week.” He has consistently opposed government shutdowns and has voted for funding in this ongoing crisis.

“These workers are overwhelmed and upset. They deserve better treatment,” he pointed out.

Turning his focus to his party, Fetterman criticized Democrats for failing to address affordability during this time. Many TSA agents earn around $50,000 annually, and he stated, “If we aren’t providing their paychecks, then don’t mention affordability.”

“It’s fundamentally wrong to shut down the government, no matter which party is responsible, and that’s why I stand against it,” he asserted.

The shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has now entered its sixth week, causing employees across pivotal agencies to miss their paychecks.

What started as a funding delay has escalated into a travel crisis, with TSA lines hitting record lengths and officers being pushed to their limits. The issue has stemmed from Senate Democrats blocking a complete DHS appropriations bill that the House had already passed.

Democrats have resisted passing clean funding as they demand reforms to immigration policy, which would effectively grant amnesty to many undocumented immigrants.

While Republicans have offered some compromises, they have drawn the line on specific demands, including judicial warrants for every arrest.

As the shutdown extends into spring travel season, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has maintained that funding for key agencies like ICE and CBP must come with significant reforms.

The stalemate has resulted in extensive wait times at major airports, with the acting TSA Administrator confirming that some security lines have exceeded four and a half hours.

Call-out rates among TSA employees have surged, with about 500 resignations noted since the closure began, and further resignations are anticipated.

This turmoil has forced some airports to completely shut security checkpoints or urge travelers to arrive three to four hours early. Warnings have also been issued that smaller regional airports could face shutdowns without a resolution.
