A New Mexico grand jury has indicted actor Timothy Busfield on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child, escalating a case tied to allegations from a television set.
Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman announced the indictment Friday in a social media post. Authorities had previously issued an arrest warrant accusing Busfield of misconduct during his time working as a director on the TV series “The Cleaning Lady.”
Busfield has denied the allegations. He turned himself in to authorities and was later released from jail.
The indictment focuses on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child. Prosecutors had also sought grooming charges, but those were not endorsed by the grand jury.

Busfield’s attorney, Larry Stein, said the grand jury’s decision undercut the state’s broader claims. Stein did not comment directly on the sexual contact counts but said the failure to secure grooming charges was significant.
He said in a statement that a prior detention hearing had already “exposed fatal weaknesses in the state’s evidence, gaps that no amount of charging decisions can cure.”
Busfield is best known for his roles in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams” and “Thirtysomething.” The case remains pending as prosecutors move forward on the remaining charges.
