House Republicans were furious Tuesday following their attempt to censure Del. Stacey Plaskett’s (DVI) bid to censure her failed. Several members accused GOP leaders of striking a deal quietly with Democrats in order to protect Rep. Cory Mills(R-FL).
Republicans at first held their ground and refused to allow Plaskett’s censure motion. Hours later, however, it was a failure, with three GOP legislators voting against the bill, while three others voted for “present” and four lawmakers skipping the entire vote.
Democrats prepared to strike back in the event that Plaskett’s measure was passed. They wanted to force Mills into a mirror-censure vote, as he had been accused of financial misconduct and domestic violence, in addition to allegations that he stole valor. He has denied all of the allegations.
After the loss, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said: “The Plaskett censure failed because the [H]ouse Leadership exchanged votes to protect [R]epublican who’s experiencing a number of issues and shouldn’t seek reelection.”
The Showdown was a resounding failure of the GOP’s September attempt to censure Rep. Ilhanomar (D, MN) for her remarks about Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Democrats also threatened to retaliate against Mills, but enough Republicans backed away from the vote.
“Another deal to keep Cory Mills from being censored over Stolen Valor. The General who “recommended” him for the Bronze Star has confirmed that he did not write it, read it or personally sign it. This. Is. “Washington,” said Rep. Nancy Mace, R-SC.
Tonight, some Republicans took the plunge on a decision to remove Stacy Plaskett from her role as House Intelligence Director because of Epstein’s ties. “They did it in order to shield a Republican with his own ethical issues from voting on a similar issue,” said Rep. Kat Cammack, R-FL. This backroom deal “sh-t” is wrong, swampy and deserves to always be exposed.
Rep. Ralph Norman, (R-SC), forced the vote by introducing a special resolution. This was in response to revelations about Plaskett’s texts exchanged with Jeffrey Epstein during an oversight hearing of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen on February 27, 2019. Epstein coached Plaskett on how to question Trump Organization officials, and then congratulated the woman with “Good job” afterward.
Norman’s measures would have removed Plaskett as a member of the House Intelligence Committee, and ordered an investigation by the Ethics Committee.
This is Washington’s problem! Norman stated after the defeat that the establishment defends ITSELF and pushes the American people ASIDE. What happened to accountability?
This just shows you how corrupt the place is. The disgusting part is that four Republicans did not vote. Three Republicans cast a ‘present’ ballot, and three Republicans cast a ‘no’ ballot. It failed. In a video posted on X, Rep. Tim Burchett said that they had cut a bargain. To me, this is disgusting.
Mills has faced controversy since months. He is an Army veteran and won his seat 2022. Washington Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation in February into allegations that he had assaulted a Republican activist female at his penthouse. Later, the accuser retracted key portions of her account.
The District of Columbia acting U.S. Attorney never signed the arrest warrant that Mills had been issued by police.
