Following a hard-fought election, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed celebrated early Wednesday, taking aim at his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers. He told Rogers to ‘enjoy your retirement,’ asserting that ‘the bad guys lost.’
Delivering his remarks to supporters in Detroit, El-Sayed was projected by CBS News to have won the Senate seat, marking a historic moment as the first Muslim elected to this position.
The former health official made sure to emphasize hope in his victory speech.
He told his opponent, ‘You chose hate, and Michigan chose hope.’
El-Sayed criticized the negative campaigning that targeted his name and religion, stating they conducted ‘one of the ugliest campaigns we’ve seen in our lifetimes.’
‘They want an America that is too small for some of us,’ he added.

His speech intertwined political commentary with personal reflections on his faith.
El-Sayed opened by recalling his use of ‘inshallah,’ or ‘God willing,’ throughout the campaign, and proclaimed, ‘Today, tonight, we can turn that ‘inshallah’ into an ‘alhamdulillah,’ meaning ‘praise be to God.’
