Ed Gallrein Triumphs Over Rep. Thomas Massie in High-Stakes Kentucky Primary

Republican Ed Gallrein has secured a stunning victory over longtime Representative Thomas Massie in a fiercely contested primary in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District. This race drew intense scrutiny as Massie had consistently opposed key initiatives from President Donald Trump, leading to the former president’s endorsement of his rival.

The results were called by Decision Desk HQ at 7:43 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday night, indicating Gallrein’s decisive lead as votes were still being counted. Throughout the evening, he maintained a solid 10-point advantage.

Election analysts noted that Massie struggled in critical voting areas on Election Day after Gallrein took an early lead in absentee ballots.

Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL captain with three decades of service, including stints with SEAL Team Six, is a fifth-generation dairy farmer from Shelby County. He and his family run a popular destination farm and Circle G Stables.

Launching his campaign in October 2025, Gallrein quickly secured President Trump’s endorsement, central to his campaign strategy.

Massie, serving the district since 2012, has often held independent views within the Republican Party. He has had multiple confrontations with President Trump regarding legislation, with tensions dating back to the early days of the Trump administration.

Although both politicians endorsed each other earlier for the 2024 election cycle, their relationship soured after Trump’s second inauguration due to Massie’s opposition to several key agenda items based on budgetary concerns.

An illustrative example includes Massie’s notable vote against the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a significant legislative package championed by Trump, which he rejected primarily over worries regarding deficits and spending levels.

Massie controversially suggested that Trump was connected to Jeffrey Epstein’s actions, devoid of supporting evidence, and called the administration the “Epstein administration.” Interestingly, he also ran ads promoting his agreement with Trump while making grave accusations during the campaign’s closing weeks.

The primary garnered national attention owing to its high stakes. Numerous external groups, including pro-Israel organizations and Trump-centric PACs, heavily invested in supporting Gallrein.

Total expenditures surpassed $32 million, marking it as the costliest U.S. House primary in history.

Throughout his campaign, Gallrein emphasized his commitment to conservative principles supportive of the president’s agenda, particularly in manufacturing, agriculture, energy, and border security. His military and agricultural background resonated with voters in the diverse northern Kentucky counties.

This contest was viewed as a critical referendum on the significance of Trump’s endorsement. Despite Massie’s dedicated following and his libertarian tendencies, coupled with a focus on gun rights and government transparency, the dynamic shifted in favor of Gallrein due to Trump’s active involvement and unprecedented spending.
