Former President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that special counsel Jack Smith has informed him of being the primary focus of the January 6 investigation and necessitates his appearance before a grand jury.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump expressed deep concern over the information relayed to him by his attorneys. He asserted that he received the letter on Sunday.
“Wow! On Sunday night, while I was with my family, having just arrived from the Turning Point event in Florida, where I won the Straw Poll against all other Republican candidates with 85.7%, with all polls showing me leading in the Republican Primary by very substantial numbers, almost everyone predicting that I will be the Republican nominee for President, and as I am leading Democrat Joe Biden in the polls by a lot, horrifying news for our Country was given to me by my attorneys,” Trump wrote.
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night) stating that I am a target of the January 6th Grand Jury Investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” he continued.
“So no, Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland, who I turned down for the United States Supreme Court (in retrospect, based on his corrupt and unethical actions, a very wise decision!), together with Joe Biden’s Department of Injustice, have effectively issued a third indictment and Arrest of Joe Biden’s number one political opponent, who is largely domination him in the race for the Presidency,” he added.
“Nothing like this has ever happened in our Country before, or even close,” he went on. “They illegally spied on my Campaign, attacked me with a totally Fake ‘Dossier’ that was funded by Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the DNC, impeached me twice (I won!), they failed on the Mueller Witch Hunt (No Collusion!), they failed on the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, the 51 ‘Intelligence’ Agents fraud, the FBI/Twitter files, the DOJ/Facebook censorship, and every other scam imaginable.”
“But on top of all that, they have no effectively indicted me three times (the DOJ staffed and runs the D.A.’s Office in Manhattan), with a probably fourth coming from Atlanta, where the DOJ are in strict, and possibly illegal coordination with the District Attorney, whose record on murder and violent crime is abysmal,” Trump said.
“This Witch Hunt is all about election interference and a complete and total political weaponization of law enforcement!” he added. “It is a very sad and dark period for our Nation!”
The target letter indicates that Smith’s team is scrutinizing Trump’s actions as president leading up to the Capitol riot on January 6. Numerous reports indicate that former top aides of Trump have already testified before the grand jury, indicating that Smith’s investigation is reaching a crucial phase.
This development coincides with Trump’s significant lead in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, emphasizing how his legal challenges could disrupt the campaign.
In addition to the ongoing investigation, Smith is prosecuting Trump on charges of mishandling classified documents and failing to comply despite repeated requests. Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing in that particular case.
Donald Trump was impeached over his handling of the January 6 riots, but was acquitted after a trial in the U.S. Senate.
The news comes as an appeal has been filed in the U.S. Supreme Court that could impact “hundreds” of January 6 trial cases, including the grand jury trial of Donald Trump.
