DOJ Launches Grand Jury Probe Into NY AG Letitia James

The Department of Justice has convened a grand jury to investigate New York Attorney General Letitia James, marking a sharp escalation in President Donald Trump’s ongoing battle with the Democrat prosecutor who has spent years targeting him.

The probe, based in Albany, is focused on potential deprivation of rights violations, two sources told Fox News Digital. This week, James’s office received federal subpoenas for documents — including those tied to her civil fraud case against Trump.

Longtime Trump Adversary

James, who took office in 2018, has been one of Trump’s most aggressive political and legal foes. She launched investigations into the Trump Organization almost immediately after her election, eventually securing a $454 million judgment in 2022 — a ruling Trump is now appealing.

James has also been central to multiple lawsuits challenging Trump’s executive actions, from cutting federal spending on left-wing programs to banning transgender medical procedures for minors.

DOJ Mortgage Fraud Probe

The grand jury investigation isn’t James’s only legal problem. In April, the Trump Federal Housing Finance Agency asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate James over mortgage fraud. That case — based in Virginia — is being led by Pardon Attorney Ed Martin, who also heads a DOJ “weaponization task force.”

Martin is simultaneously investigating Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) in a related Maryland mortgage case.

Trump blasted James on Truth Social:

“Letitia James, a totally corrupt politician, should resign from her position as New York State Attorney General, IMMEDIATELY.”

What Comes Next

A grand jury is the first step toward a possible indictment. The panel will review evidence and hear witness testimony to determine if probable cause exists to bring charges — a process that could take weeks or months.

James’s spokesperson claimed the DOJ move was “weaponization” of the justice system, but critics point out she has spent years using her office to target political opponents, especially Trump.

With the DOJ now turning its sights on her, James is facing the kind of aggressive legal scrutiny she has long directed at others.
