Disney Faces Massive Job Cuts Amid Industry Struggles

The Walt Disney Company has initiated another wave of layoffs, targeting approximately 1,000 positions throughout its various divisions. This move reflects the company’s attempts to navigate a challenging market that demands adaptation.

Job reductions will impact Disney’s established television operations, including ESPN, as well as its film studio. Employees in areas such as product and technology will also face uncertainty, alongside certain corporate functions.

Josh D’Amaro, newly appointed CEO, emphasized the need for a more streamlined operation following earlier efforts to consolidate marketing in January.

In a memo to staff, D’Amaro stated, “Over the past several months, we have looked at ways in which we can streamline our operations in various parts of the company to ensure we deliver the world-class creativity and innovation our fans value and expect from Disney.” He further noted that the fast-paced nature of the industry necessitates a constant reevaluation of workforce agility and technological needs.

These layoffs signal that Disney’s cost-cutting measures are ongoing. The company previously laid off about 8,000 employees after Bob Iger’s return to leadership in 2022, with a total employee count of around 230,000 as of late 2025.

D’Amaro, a veteran within the company since 1998, steps into his role during a tumultuous time for Hollywood, marked by the decline of traditional business models and the costly nature of streaming services.

Disney is not isolated in facing these issues. The entertainment industry has seen substantial job losses as companies seek to cut expenses and prepare for sluggish growth. For instance, Paramount Skydance has let go of around 2,000 employees, while Sony Pictures Entertainment announced similar plans to cut hundreds of jobs.
