Over the weekend, Dez Bryant, known for his time with the Dallas Cowboys, had a distressing encounter with law enforcement in Southlake, Texas. The situation began when two drivers allegedly drove recklessly, provoking a heated exchange that eventually drew police attention.
The confrontation escalated outside of a restaurant, where video footage captures Bryant alongside two other men on the ground, handcuffed, while an officer had a gun drawn. This alarming scene was witnessed by Bryant’s daughters and girlfriend, leaving him feeling deeply unsettled.
Bryant explained that the trouble ignited when the two vehicles cut him off, continuing their reckless behavior until they reached the same restaurant parking lot. While he confronted them, he admitted to using harsh language to demand they cease their dangerous driving.
As tensions rose, one driver reportedly threatened to shoot Bryant. He reacted with his own sharp warning, insisting he would retaliate if necessary. However, the individual ultimately only brandished a cellphone to record the argument.
When police arrived at Chiloso Mexican Bistro, they ordered everyone involved to the ground. Bryant briefly found himself inside a police cruiser before being released with a citation for “Assault by Contact.” This citation does not equate to an arrest but mandates his appearance in municipal court by November 20.
Under Texas law, this type of assault is classified as a Class C misdemeanor, potentially resulting in a fine of up to $500. Bryant expressed his concern that officers did not thoroughly consider evidence prior to the incident, particularly given the reliance on the cellphone footage of the other man.
He conveyed that he felt the police approach was unbalanced and stressed the need for a thorough investigation of the incident. The emotional toll on his daughters, who witnessed their father in such a precarious situation, was also a major worry for him.
Throughout his career, Bryant became renowned for his achievements, finishing his time with Dallas with remarkable statistics in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. Despite this troubling event, he remains committed to his relationship with local law enforcement, calling for a fair review of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The City of Southlake has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the police actions taken during this event.
