Ilhan Omar is currently facing scrutiny from within her own political party. A notable Minnesota Democrat has publicly cast doubt on her denials regarding longstanding allegations of marriage fraud, asserting that he believes the claims are probably true.
Former Minnesota state Rep. Joe Radinovich, a well-known Democratic operative, stepped forward on Thursday as federal investigations continue into the contentious congresswoman. His comments represent a significant political challenge to Omar, who has consistently dismissed inquiries about her marriage history and immigration status as politically-driven assaults.
Radinovich stated, “Democrats should understand that the allegation is almost certainly true,” indicating that varying conclusions could be drawn from that assertion. He argued that her denials—labeling the allegations as part of a right-wing conspiracy—are far from credible.
The former state representative referenced accusations alleging that Omar was involved in a marriage to her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, in 2009 as part of a purported immigration fraud scheme. While Omar has denied these allegations, they remain largely unproven with respect to the available public evidence.
In addition to the marriage claims, Radinovich expressed concerns regarding Omar’s financial dealings. He cautioned that her defense on financial matters appears similarly questionable and stated that there hasn’t been adequate public clarification.
Backlash quickly ensued from fellow Democrats defending Omar. Briana Rose Lee, an activist in the Minneapolis Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and a former operations director for Omar’s campaigns, criticized Radinovich. She deemed his remarks a politically charged attack and a low point for him.
Radinovich, however, stood firm, noting that while he distrusts the credibility of the Trump administration’s Department of Justice, he remains confident in the veracity of the accusations against Omar.
His statements are noteworthy given Radinovich’s established ties within Democratic politics. Having served in Minnesota’s House and worked on key campaigns, he is not an outsider making unfounded claims.
Despite this, he has faced counter-accusations regarding his motives, especially given his past political conflicts with Omar, as he opposed her in primary challenges in recent years.
The controversy has intensified following a search of Omar’s D.C. residence on October 12, where investigators reportedly seized her passport and electronic devices. Federal scrutiny is also focused on whether false information was submitted concerning her citizenship in documents years ago.
Moreover, recent reporting has revealed that the Obama administration looked into allegations about Omar’s marriage back in 2016, which continued until the investigation was closed in 2021.
Omar has maintained that the allegations against her are unfounded and labeled the renewed federal scrutiny as part of a political vendetta led by Trump. Her campaign responded sharply to Radinovich’s criticism, labeling him a troubled individual with a personal agenda against her.
While Radinovich’s comments do not legally implicate Omar, they signify that her challenges now extend beyond Republican opposition, drawing concern from a former Democratic figure questioning her credibility. With federal investigators examining her immigration and financial history, the implications for Omar could be serious.
