Dem Rep: ‘I Need More Migrants in My District, for Redistricting Purposes’

A resurfaced video of Democratic Rep. Yvette Clarke of New York is drawing attention for her remarks about the political implications of immigration in her district.

Speaking during a 2021 House Foreign Affairs Committee briefing, Clarke stated:

“I’m from Brooklyn, New York. We have a diaspora that can absorb a significant number of these migrants. When I hear colleagues talk about the doors of the inn being closed, no room at the inn, I’m saying I need more people in my district just for redistricting purposes.”

She added that migrants “could clearly fit here” in her district.

Reactions from Republican Lawmakers

The comments have resurfaced and sparked criticism from several Republican lawmakers:

  • Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) reposted the clip and said, “Wow. Democrat Rep. Yvette Clarke said the quiet part out loud.”

  • Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) commented in March, “Democrats wanted millions of illegals to invade America for redistricting purposes. Don’t take my word for it. Listen to Rep. Yvette Clarke say the quiet part out loud.”

Media and Public Response

  • Fox News confirmed the video was from 2021.

  • Betsy McCaughey, former New York Lt. Gov., wrote in an op-ed for the New York Post that New York Democrats benefit from immigration by maintaining congressional representation despite population loss.

Legislative Action

He said in a statement:

“While people continue to flee Democrat-run cities, desperate Democrats have back-filled the mass exodus with illegal immigrants so that they do not lose their seats in Congress or their electoral votes…”

Context

Under current law, the U.S. Census counts all people residing in the country, regardless of immigration status. This count affects the number of House seats each state receives and the allocation of Electoral College votes.
