Cornyn Backs Trump, Advocates for Election Integrity Bill

In a bold move, Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) — known for his allegiance to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) — has penned an op-ed urging his fellow Republican Senators to abandon the so-called “zombie” filibuster. This change aims to facilitate the passage of the highly favored election integrity measure, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act.

Cornyn articulates his rationale for endorsing the SAVE Act, which sets up new obstacles to deter non-citizen voting, such as mandatory photo ID requirements. With his endorsement on record, he has also expressed enthusiasm for the talking filibuster, a vital procedural tool enabling the minority party to physically contest legislation they oppose.

The current legislative framework allows for any bill failing to reach 60 votes to be swiftly shelved, a tactic commonly referred to as the “zombie filibuster.”

Importance of Protecting Election Integrity

In his op-ed titled, “Sen. Cornyn: Why the SAVE Act matters more than the filibuster,” he stressed that prioritizing election integrity and securing homeland funding takes precedence over maintaining conventional Senate practices, including the filibuster’s required 60-vote threshold.

Cornyn drew a parallel to self-defense, highlighting past Democratic efforts to abolish the filibuster in 2022 for election legislation, which were thwarted by their own infighting. He referenced statements by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer indicating Democrats’ determination to revoke the filibuster if they regain power.

“When the situation changes, leaders must adapt. Today, Democrats are manipulating Senate rules to block the SAVE America Act, undermine homeland security funding, and harm the American populace for political gain against President Donald Trump,” Cornyn articulated.

With Democrats poised to eliminate the filibuster, Cornyn framed the scenario as Republicans choosing either to “disarm unilaterally” or permit Democrats to carry out their plans unimpeded. He reaffirmed his backing for the talking filibuster.

“After weighing my options, I endorse any Senate rule alterations necessary to advance the SAVE America Act and homeland security funding past Democratic roadblocks, reaching the president’s desk for approval,” Cornyn emphasized.

As Cornyn pushes forward, Leader Thune expresses skepticism about the feasibility of employing the talking filibuster. Thune claims the conference lacks the necessary votes and instead seeks a straightforward floor vote for the bill, which seems destined for failure.

Thune has suggested that the drive to advance the bill stems from “paid influencers,” despite it being labeled a top priority by President Donald Trump.

The Republican stance on deploying the talking filibuster remains uncertain.

Former Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) has indicated he would resign if the talking filibuster is implemented. Meanwhile, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) has signified her support for the SAVE Act, but has not endorsed the talking filibuster.

Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has refrained from approving the strategy, and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) has opposed the SAVE Act altogether. Consequently, Republicans may find themselves lacking the requisite 50 votes.

For Cornyn, this op-ed arrives at a critical time as he vies for Trump’s endorsement in his contest against Ken Paxton. The former president has made it clear that he will withhold support unless the SAVE Act is passed, while Paxton has pledged to step aside should Republicans succeed with the bill.
