Controversy Erupts as Maine Senate Candidate Faces Backlash for Pro-Hamas Remarks

A notable Democratic candidate in Maine’s crucial Senate race is now in a defensive position following the resurfacing of past comments that have sparked considerable backlash.

Graham Platner, leading the pack for the Senate seat, has come under fire after archived Reddit posts, highlighted by Jewish Insider, revealed his praise for a violent 2014 Hamas attack on Israeli soldiers. These remarks jeopardize a race that Democrats see as a potential win against a prominent Republican.

Reports indicate that Platner commented on videos shared in the r/CombatFootage forum, expressing what many view as admiration for the attack. One post of his stated, “Looks like an all around well executed and successful small unit raid to me.”

In an even more striking remark, he asserted, “From a strictly professional standpoint, this was a damn fine looking and successful raid against a superior opponent, I dig it.”

Footage from the attack showcased Hamas operatives ambushing Israeli soldiers, resulting in fatalities and an attempted kidnapping. With ongoing tensions in the region, these ten-year-old comments are resurfacing at a particularly sensitive time within U.S. political discourse.

Adding to the controversy, Platner’s Reddit account has since been deleted, raising suspicions as critics ask why this action was taken amidst growing scrutiny.

While his campaign hasn’t addressed the Hamas comments directly, they previously defended him against earlier critiques, suggesting that voters should not evaluate him based solely on statements made over a decade prior.

“Mainers know that Graham should not be defined by the worst thing he said on the internet over a decade ago,” a campaign spokesperson stated regarding past comments.

This latest incident may prove challenging to navigate. Platner has emerged as a strong candidate in Maine’s Democratic primaries, with recent polls showing him significantly ahead of Gov. Janet Mills, reportedly by a margin of 55% to 28%, according to an Emerson College survey.

The Senate race is considered one of the most competitive nationwide, as Democrats aim to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins and lessen the GOP’s majority. A candidate plagued by controversy could hinder these efforts, providing Republicans with a strong campaign argument.

Platner’s past statements align with a larger trend of criticism he has leveled at Israel, labeling its military actions in Gaza as genocidal. These positions have already stirred debate within the Democratic Party.

As the primary date approaches and early voting kicks off, Platner faces the challenge of retaining his frontrunner status while addressing inquiries about his controversial past.

For now, he holds a commanding lead.
