Congressman Kean Speaks Out After Prolonged Medical Leave

Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. has addressed his lengthy absence from Washington, expressing optimism for a complete recovery. He has confirmed his intention to seek another term in Congress.

The Republican representative from New Jersey’s 7th District has not cast a vote since March 5, having missed around 100 consecutive votes. His recent interview with the New Jersey Globe provided clarity on his situation.

Kean stated, “My doctors are confident that I’m on the road to a full recovery,” while emphasizing the importance of transparency to his constituents.

At 57, he anticipates returning to voting and public engagements soon, assuring that his health will not bring long-term issues. “I expect to return to voting and the campaign trail within the next few weeks,” Kean added.

Questions surrounding his absence have heightened as voters and commentators scrutinized the limited updates from his office. House Speaker Mike Johnson admitted he lacked information beyond recognizing Kean’s medical situation.

Rumors regarding his potential retirement were dismissed by Kean, affirming, “I’m running,” when speaking to the media.

Kean successfully flipped his district in 2022, defeating Democrat Tom Malinowski, and later won re-election in 2024 against Democrat Sue Altman, solidifying a crucial seat for Republicans in northern New Jersey.

His absence has posed challenges for the party as the House operates on narrow margins. Multiple weeks of votes were missed, with little explanation given other than he was undergoing treatment.

His father, former New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean Sr., has voiced confidence in his son’s recovery process.

Despite the scrutiny, Kean has remained actively involved with district matters and congressional staff during his recovery.

The competition in New Jersey’s 7th District is anticipated to be fierce as the 2026 midterms approach.
