A 76-year-old man was beaten to death at a South Side bus stop Monday night in a brutal attack caught on surveillance video, before the suspect allegedly carjacked a grandmother’s SUV with her two grandchildren inside.
Police say the suspect, a 32-year-old man with a nearly two-decade criminal record, was later arrested in Indiana after crashing the stolen vehicle.
Deadly Attack on Halsted Street
The attack occurred around 9:15 p.m. at a CTA bus stop near 95th and Halsted Streets.
Silent video shows the elderly victim and the suspect exchanging blows. The older man appears to strike first, but the younger man quickly retaliates, punching him and shoving him to the ground.

Police and local media stopped the footage there, saying what followed was too disturbing.

According to ABC7, the suspect continued to beat and kick the victim multiple times before walking away.
Victim Dies at Hospital
Responding officers found the 76-year-old unconscious with severe head trauma.
He was transported to Advocate Christ Hospital, where he later died.

Ald. Ronnie Mosley (21st Ward) called it a “heartbreaking and senseless act of violence,” urging residents to seek community mental health resources.
SUV Carjacked at McDonald’s
According to a police report obtained by ABC7, the same suspect then went to a nearby McDonald’s.
A 60-year-old grandmother said he entered her parked green Kia Telluride while her 3-year-old granddaughter and 14-year-old grandson were in the backseat.
The suspect allegedly threatened to shoot the children and ordered them out of the car before speeding away.
The grandmother told reporters she was able to track the stolen SUV using her granddaughter’s iPad, which had been left inside.
Soon after, the vehicle was found crashed in Schererville, Indiana — about 35 minutes from the crime scene.
Police arrested the suspect at the site of the wreck.
Long Criminal Record
Authorities said the 32-year-old suspect has a lengthy record dating back nearly 20 years.
In 2019, he was charged with robbery and aggravated battery in Cook County after prosecutors said he beat a man and stole his bike in Glenwood.
He also served jail time for a 2015 robbery in Matteson and was charged with resisting arrest in 2010.
The suspect’s name has not been released because he has not yet been formally charged in Monday’s incidents.
He is currently being held in Indiana while police continue their investigation.
Chicago police say they are working with suburban and Indiana authorities on the case.
