Former White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor — the man who oversaw Joe Biden’s medical care during his presidency — invoked the Fifth Amendment multiple times during a closed-door interview with the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday.
According to Chairman James Comer (R-KY), the session — expected to last hours — ended after just 30 minutes when O’Connor refused to answer questions on whether he was ever told to lie about Biden’s health, or whether he believed Biden was mentally unfit to perform his duties.
“This is unprecedented,” Comer said. “It adds more fuel to the fire that there was a cover-up.”
Doctor Claims “Privilege,” Refuses to Cooperate
O’Connor’s legal team claimed the doctor was simply protecting physician–patient confidentiality — and that his use of the Fifth Amendment “does not imply guilt.”
“Revealing confidential patient information would violate the most fundamental ethical duty of a physician,” his lawyers said in a statement.
But that didn’t sit well with Comer or the public, who are increasingly questioning what the White House is hiding about Biden’s condition.
Comer: “Most People Plead the Fifth When They Have Criminal Exposure”
Chairman Comer didn’t mince words:
“Most people invoke the Fifth when they have criminal liability. His actions today speak loud and clear.”
The committee is investigating whether Biden’s inner circle covered up evidence of the president’s mental and physical decline, and whether voters were misled about Biden’s capacity to serve.
Comer said the investigation will move forward with more witnesses, more depositions, and more transparency.
Surprise Appearance from Democrat Lawmaker Defending Silence
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) — a progressive firebrand who made a surprise appearance at the interview — defended O’Connor’s silence:
“It’s astounding to say invoking the Fifth means you’re guilty,” Crockett claimed, also blaming the DOJ for conducting a parallel criminal probe.
Crockett, a former criminal defense attorney, insisted that O’Connor was doing what any lawyer would advise.
“This rogue DOJ is running a contemporaneous investigation — I think he did what he had to do,” she said.
DOJ Involvement Raises Even More Questions
O’Connor’s lawyers have requested the Oversight Committee pause its investigation while the Department of Justice conducts its own probe — a revelation that shocked even some in the press.
The team quickly exited the hearing, offering no comment, further fueling suspicions.
