His six-decade career left an indelible mark on British theater, admired for his exceptional versatility in challenging roles.

A Legacy of Shakespeare

Fellow actor Miriam Margolyes reflected on their friendship, describing him as a brilliant and wise performer. She expressed deep sadness at his passing, saying, “Bless your dear memory, old chum.” Pennington’s achievements included iconic portrayals of characters like Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear, contributing significantly to his reputation in the theatrical community.

Beyond acting, he made his mark as a director, staging Twelfth Night in various prestigious locations, including Tokyo and Chicago. His role in the National Theatre Bucharest’s Hamlet Project further underscored his commitment to the craft.

In a British Academy Shakespeare lecture, Pennington vividly recounted his first encounter with Shakespeare’s work at age 11, detailing how it profoundly resonated with him. His recollections highlight a lifelong passion for the playwright’s language.
