Austin Shooter Found Wearing Iranian-Regime Shirt as Terror Inquiry Expands

The Austin mass shooting in the Sixth Street entertainment district just after 2 a.m. on March 1 has prompted a terrorism probe after officers found the suspect wearing Islamic and Iranian imagery.

The gunman opened fire outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden as bar crowds were dispersing, killing two people and wounding 14 before officers shot him dead roughly a minute later.

Authorities identified the shooter as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Senegal who lived in Pflugerville, Texas.

Federal sources told reporting that Diagne wore a hoodie reading “Property of Allah” with an undershirt displaying the post‑1979 Islamic Republic of Iran flag emblem underneath.

Investigators also recovered other items from his person and vehicle that are being examined for possible extremist links.

The FBI said evidence collected at the scene “gives possible indications of a nexus to terrorism,” while stressing the inquiry is ongoing and a formal motive has not been established.

Geopolitical backdrop

The shooting occurred days after the United States and Israel began a major campaign against Iran called “Operation Epic Fury,” which reportedly started February 28 and struck Iranian missile systems, naval assets, and senior leaders.

Reports said Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the initial strikes, sharply escalating tensions across the region.

Iran has since launched missile and drone attacks across the Middle East, and U.S. forces have suffered casualties as the conflict widened.

Investigation and local impact

Federal and local investigators are probing whether the Austin attack was inspired by or linked to the wider geopolitical confrontation, while noting no confirmed direct ties to foreign groups have been announced.

Authorities are scrutinizing Diagne’s background, communications, and digital footprint as part of that inquiry.

Austin police said officers engaged the shooter almost immediately after shots were fired, likely preventing additional casualties.

Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene and several wounded remain hospitalized, with officials urging the public to donate blood to help the injured.

The incident has ignited fierce debate over immigration policy, national security, and the threat of foreign‑inspired violence on American soil.

Emergency responders also reported a brief delay when a Waymo autonomous vehicle blocked part of the scene, reviving concerns about driverless cars during crises.

The FBI and local authorities emphasized the probe is active and ongoing as they seek to determine whether the attack was isolated or part of an extremist network.
