Former and current AT&T customers may be eligible to receive thousands of dollars in compensation after the telecom giant agreed to a $177 million class-action settlement over two massive data breaches, according to CNET.
Two Major Breaches Impacted Millions
The first case stems from a March 2024 breach that exposed the personal data of 73 million current and former AT&T customers, including birth dates and Social Security numbers that were later posted on the dark web.
A second breach, announced in July 2024, compromised the call and text records of nearly all AT&T customers. Hackers uploaded those logs onto a third-party platform.
Settlement Details and Timeline
The $177 million settlement breaks down into $149 million for the first lawsuit and $28 million for the second. A final approval hearing is set for Dec. 3 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.
Payouts will not be distributed until late 2025 at the earliest, and possibly later if appeals are filed. Claims must be processed first by the settlement administrator.
Who Is Eligible?
-
Customers affected by the March 2024 breach can claim up to $5,000 for losses that occurred in 2019 or later.
-
Customers affected by the July 2024 breach can claim up to $2,500 for losses after April 14, 2024.
-
Customers impacted by both breaches can claim up to $7,500 as part of the “overlap settlement class.”
AT&T requires documentation to show that financial losses are “fairly traceable” to the breaches.
