Ashley Biden, the 44-year-old daughter of President Joe Biden, has filed to divorce her husband of 13 years, Dr. Howard Krein, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. The filing was made Monday in Philadelphia.
Krein, 59, is a plastic surgeon and otolaryngologist at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The two married in 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, at the church where Ashley was baptized. They met in 2010 through Ashley’s late brother, Beau Biden, who died of cancer in 2015.
Social Media Sends a Message
Ashley marked the filing with a since-deleted Instagram story showing her walking through a park giving a thumbs up to Beyoncé’s “Freedom.” She also reposted a quote reading, “New life, means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” accompanied by Lauryn Hill’s Freedom Time.
Life in Philadelphia
The couple lived in a $1.3 million home in Philadelphia. Ashley, who has a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania, has worked in criminal justice reform.
During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Ashley recalled her father’s personal touch at her wedding reception, held at the Biden family’s lakeside estate in Wilmington. “He was riding around in his John Deere 4-wheeler, fixing the place settings, arranging the plants, and he was very emotional,” she told the crowd.
Political Defenses and Public Statements
Ashley has mostly avoided the spotlight but has been vocal in defending her father. Earlier this year, she pushed back against media claims that Joe Biden was cognitively unfit during his final months in the White House.
In June, she posted a beach photo with her parents and wrote, “The ONLY coverup of this family is a BEACH coverup!!!” — an apparent jab at CNN anchor Jake Tapper, whose recent book accused the White House of hiding Biden’s health and cognitive issues.
She insisted Biden “was always MORE than capable” of doing the job and accused critics of spreading “noise/static” and “fake news.” She thanked supporters for their “love and support” during a challenging period.
Ashley is Jill Biden’s only biological daughter. Both she and Krein were present in the Oval Office in June 2024 when Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election.
