Al Green’s Political Career Takes a Major Hit in Texas

Texas redistricting has resulted in the downfall of a prominent Democratic figure.

In a closely watched Houston-area Democratic runoff, Rep. Al Green lost to Rep. Christian Menefee after both were drawn into the same district due to new boundaries.

The election for Texas’ traditionally Democratic 18th Congressional District transformed into a fierce battle between incumbents, as neither candidate achieved a majority in the March primary runoff, necessitating a second round.

Menefee initially led the first round with 46% compared to Green’s 44.2%, setting the stage for a decisive rematch that concluded with Menefee securing the win.

Al Green has gained attention as a consistent critic of President Donald Trump, notably pushing for impeachment during his time in office and facing ejection from State of the Union addresses for his protests.

Following the close primary, Green expressed concern over significant spending against his campaign from the crypto sector, claiming it influenced the narrow results. He also criticized Menefee for a perceived lack of attendance in early congressional votes.

Menefee, a fresh face in Congress, positioned himself as a dynamic alternative, aiming to present a more vigorous challenge to Trump and the Republican party. His campaign emphasized his background, suggesting a new approach was vital for Democratic success in Texas.

Now, Menefee will move forward to face Republican Ronald Whitfield in November. Given the district’s strong Democratic lean, he is viewed as the favorite in the upcoming general election.
